Her parents, Queen and Chief Dr. Frank Megbele, were both of Itsekiri origin and were both academic scholars. Omawunmi is 12 out of 15 children of her parents.

Omawumi attended the College of Education Demonstration Secondary School in Warri and then studied Law at Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria.

She also has a degree in French from the University of Education in Benin.
